A concept that many Oregon coaches, athletes, and fans have batted around in stadium seats, at post run gatherings and on message boards finally came to fruition last weekend in Bend, Oregon. Summit coach Dave Turnbull decided to offer a chance for the best athletes in all classifications to compete against one another on Summit High’s newly completed world-class quality Mondo track facility at the Oregon Elite Championship.
First year participation was not as high as was hoped and planned for by meet staff and volunteers, however the match-ups and performances showed the value in this inter-class championship. Some of Oregon’s finest prep track and field athletes were grateful for the opportunity to compete. A few athletes found improvement even without the added competition, one found an untapped coaching talent and others were able to continue sharpening for national meets held later in June.
Kellie vs. Kayla One of the most exciting match ups was between sprint standouts Kayla Smith (Benson sr) and Kellie Schueler (Summit jr) in the 100m and 200m, each having won both of these races in their respective classification (6A/ 5A) at the state meet in Eugene this year. Smith with times of 11.84 (Wind 2.4) and 24.01; Schueler breaking her own state meet records in 11.78 (Wind 1.9) and 23.94 seemed the makings of a couple of good races. The two faced off at both of these distances on Saturday, with Schueler coming out on top in both cases. The completion of the 100m dash allowed both girls to laugh about their pre-race jitters. “I think I was a lot less nervous for state,” confessed Kellie. Kayla agreed with an emphatic nod of her head. “You think, okay, I’ve been here, I’ve been to Eugene. At state, if we go there and run our race we can accomplish what we set out to. Here it is more up in the air,” continued Schueler.
After a 200m win which put Kellie in the record books as Oregon’s second fastest ever at that distance and Smith the third, Schueler was all smiles and said, “I can’t believe it. Really, it is all because Kayla is here. There is no way I could run that hard without her here.” It is possible that Schueler had been trained by Summit coaching staff to deliver the perfect testimonial for the OR Elite, but more likely a result of what happens when the best battle the best…they get better.
Smith wrapped up her high school career and Schueler took the next step into the postseason, which will include Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensborough NC and USATF Junior Nationals in Eugene.
Road to Nationals Schueler was not the only one able to use this meet as a chance to step us their game prior to national competitions. Rogue River junior Cole Watson won the 3A state 400, 800 and 1500. His state win in the 800 was 1:56.85. Watson was hoping he might get a chance to run with national leaders and Oregon mid-distance greats Elijah Greer (Lake Oswego sr) and Nathan Mathabane (Lincoln sr). Even without that heat in the front, Watson found his stride in the end.
“With 200 meters to go, I came through 600 and I was like ‘Oh, I’m not as fast as I want to be through 600.’ I don’t know, I found another gear there, so I was surprised.” explained Watson of his 1:52.64 PR performance. “Breathing the warm air, it didn’t seem like I was ever out of breath.” Watson plans to race in a B heat at the Prefontaine Classic, and said, “I am going to be in the tail end of that pack for sure with all the pros, so hopefully I can just hang on.” Hanging on for an automatic Junior Nationals qualifier will be the goal there.
Get to the point Culver senior Nevin Lewis showed dominance at the 2A state meet held at Western Oregon by taking championship titles in the 100m (10.93 #), 200m (21.84 Wind 2.2), and 400m (49.34#) dashes. With state two weeks prior to the OR Elite, it was a question whether that would be a factor. Of that lag time between racing, Lewis said, “ I was definitely intending to run here today. I didn’t really train much until the beginning of this week, I ran a little. I think the rest helped me a little bit.” This may be considered an understatement considering Lewis achieved the same 1,2,4 (10.81/ 21.83/ 48.23) triple with faster times against strong competitors like 6A champ Matt Anthony (Ontario jr) who finished second to Lewis in the two shorter races. Lewis shared that he “was excited to kind of prove a point.”
Lewis is not yet sure if he will continue to compete in the postseason. His plans beyond the summer are to play football at Portland State University. It looks like PSU got a deal, because although Lewis may not run track initially, he says he will probably compete again.
Family fun & food Three-time 4A 400m state champion Laura Schmitt (La Salle sr) doesn’t get to duke it out often, even her state titles were not very close races. The lack of competition and desire for personal challenge along with a little convincing from her coaches drove Schmitt to step up to the 800m run a few times throughout the season. It was when Schmitt had someone (Taylor Wallace, Henley sr) to chase that she hit a 4 second PR of 2:14 for the distance. Schmitt entered in hopes of having that kind of experience, and prepared much like she did for the state meet with a moderately hard workout. For the workout, Schmitt enlisted mom to handle the stopwatch.
“She is not a professional timer, so the splits were a little off. Like, one time she clocked me to the wrong line, so it was a little different time than I wanted, but it’s okay b/c she’s my mom and she was willing to help.” On race day, unfortunately 5A champ Schueler was busy fending off Smith, and another drop left Schmitt on her own up front with a winning time of 57.95. Future plans for Schmitt include running at the University of Washington and, as shared by Schmitt, “I am going to eat unhealthy food.”
Back in the game One of the best throwers in the country is McMinnville senior Alyssa Hasslen, currently ranked national #3 in the shot put and #13 in the discus throw. Although Hasslen was hoping Laura Bobek (Astoria sr) would compete, she was prepared to compete against herself. In particular, Hasslen competed against her own state meet performances the week prior. At the state meet Hasslen was nursing a lower back injury, icing and resting between events. “I feel much better. Today I came out, and I was able to practice on Wednesday. I had a very good practice compared to how they’ve been going recently. And, today I came out feeling really good.”
Hasslen won the shot put in 48-04.50. “I felt really good, I wasn’t very consistent, but my back’s not hurting so I can’t ask for anything better.” Added Hasslen. “It is warm. I try to stay in the shade as much as possible. We’ve been having warm weather so I am kind of used to it, and I’m going to Arizona next year so I need to get used to it.”
Her goal for the meet; “To throw close to my PR, well obviously to PR, I’m wanting to throw 50 feet soon.” Hopefully by Junior Nationals, which are at the end of June.” Hasslen came close to her goal, and then went on to win the discus competition in 155-03.50. A successful meet, Hasslen announced, “I threw better than at state, and that’s good.” Bigger is better The pole vault competition looked like it was going to end early, until 6A state champion Jared Hippler (Oregon City sr, photo left by Chris Shunk) made some changes. “I started on my smaller poles and was just blowing through too bad, so third attempt I jumped up to my bigger pole and it started going good from there”, shared Hippler. Finishing with the second PR (16-04.00) in as many weeks, Hippler explained, “I finally got it mentally down to get on the bigger poles and the last two weeks I’ve PRed 6 inches. So, I’m feeling really good now.”
Hippler liked that “this week was more calming. It is one of the better, if not best places I’ve vaulted at.” No real surprises in the field, the 1-2 (Hippler – JJ Juilfs, Sheldon so 16-00.00) finish identical to the state meet, which according to Hippler was a positive thing, “ we had good depth in the competition that really had some adrenaline and got me up there.” Hippler will fill the early summer with competition, first the Border Duel at Lewis & Clark, then Junior Nationals, for which he qualified here. With practice heights in the high 16s, Hippler hopes for a 17-foot mark at Junior Nationals.
Moving on up Southridge senior Chloe Steinbeck (Photo rt by Chris Shunk) also liked the idea for the meet and the chance to compete. “I wanted to break my PR of 2:12”, a race goal Steinbeck shared. The race played into Steinbeck’s hands. She said, “It went out exactly how I wanted it to actually. I knew Alyssa would go out, so I was just planning to draft off her for a little bit, take the lead on the back stretch and then hopefully take it home for the win.”
Alyssa O’Connor (Summit sr) did take early control of the pace and stated, “The first 200 was fast, I think like 29. I didn’t’ want to go out that fast, but it was too late. About 500m in I really felt myself slow down, and I was just holding on.” O’Connor managed to hold on for third in 2:14.23 behind second place finisher Julia Fonk (Franklin jr) 2:13.75 and winner Chloe Steinbeck (2:13.02).
This being the second time Steinbeck and O’Connor raced each other in the 800 this season shows how Steinbeck, a former 400m specialist has moved up to the 800m and continues to work on cracking the code on exactly how to run the challenging distance.
“I would like to say I was nervous, especially because there are good girls here, but I really wasn’t at all. I wasn’t really comfortable with the 800 for a while, but now I am getting used to it.“ Steinbeck will need to harness that confidence at the end of June when she competes in the 800m run at her future home track of Hayward Field in the Junior Nationals.
Watching the girls line up for the 800m run, one competitor licked her chops so to speak. “I went up to my cross country coach right before the race, and said I wish I was in that race”, admitted Schueler. Proving her prowess will carry into the two-lap race in Friday night’s 4x800m relay where she split 2:08, Schueler accepts that even though “I am excited to move up. It might be a while, maybe even college until I really do.” We can expect to see her out for a senior season on cross country in the fall.
Saturday Highlights -
- Kellie Schueler (Summit jr) finished first in both the 100m dash (11.74) and 200m dash (23.69) ahead of Benson senior Kayla Smith who took second in both races (11.89/ 23.69). Schueler's 200m time is a new personal best, a new school record and moves her into the 10th nationally ranked position.
- Culver senior Nevin Lewis demonstrated that his sprint skills extend beyond the small school classification in which he competed for his state titles two weeks ago with first place finishes in the 100m (10.81), 200m (21.83) and 400m dash (48.23).
- Alyssa Hasslen (McMinnville sr) improved on her winning 6A state meet performances, closing in on her personal bests with a 48-04.50 in the shot put and 155-03.50 in the discus throw competition
- Rogue River Valley junior Cole Watson was hoping to go head-to-head against top big-A runners like Greer and/or Mathabane, but managed to make the trip worthwhile with a straight from the gun effort that ended with a 1:52.64 win
- The girls 800m run lived up to its billing with Southridge senior Chloe Steinbeck finishing first in 2:13.02, Franklin junior Jessica Fonk took second in 2:13.75, Summit senior Alyssa O'Connor was third in 2:14.23 and Hood River Valley junior Lauren Lloyd fourth in 2:15.11
- Three time 4A state champion in the 400m dash, Laura Schmitt (La Salle sr) was first out of the blocks and never looked back as she crossed the finish line in 57.95
- The Wilsonville girls 4x100m relay won in a new school record and Summit track record time of 48.76
- Jared Hippler (Oregon City sr) went up another inch since last week's 6A state championship, with JJ Juilfs (Sheldon so) again in second with a solid 16-footer
Friday Summary - The opening evening of the first Oregon Elite Championship provided just a small taste of what to expect when Oregon's classes collide. In the girls 2k steeplechase, Megan Fristoe (Summit fr) finished first in 7:38.17 with a nearly 20-second margin separating her from second place. Fristoe has shown her pacing skills all year with fourth place finishes at the 5A state cross country meet (19:04) and in the 3k (10:32.02) at last week's state track meet. Junior Pat Madden of Summit won the 3k steeple in 11:01.15. The highlight of the evening was a two team race, or shall we say pace, with Summit fielding a girls 4x800m relay team with two freshman (Kira Kelly, Keelin Moehl) and two juniors (Kellie Schueler, Eirann Cohen). The girls pulled out a season best and NW #2 time of 9:29.43 in the rarely contested event. The exciting thing about the young relay team is just that, they will all return next year. West Linn (Zach Boyd-Helm, Tim Donnelly, Cullen Wannarka, Taylor West) took first in the boys 4x800 in a time 8:21.41 with Franklin claiming second in 8:29.37. Besides highlighting top Oregon talent, the Oregon Elite will showcase Summit's new Mondo-surfaced track, the only of it's kind in Oregon.
